Parents often ask me: “What makes tuition different from school? Won’t my child just be learning the same thing again?” It’s a good question, and the short answer is no. Tuition is not about repeating lessons. It’s about filling gaps, building confidence, and giving your child the individual support that is almost impossible to provide in a busy classroom.

In school, teachers have to plan for a whole class at once. They do a brilliant job, but they have thirty or more students, each at a different level. Lessons move quickly, and there isn’t always time to stop and explain things in three different ways. Some children feel nervous asking questions in front of their classmates, and they can fall behind even when they’re trying their best.

Tuition feels very different. It’s one-to-one, or sometimes a very small group, which means the pace is set for your child alone. We can slow down when something feels tricky, or move faster when they’ve mastered a skill. If they’re unsure about how to structure an essay, we’ll practise it step by step until it clicks. If they’re confident with structure but struggle with analysis, we’ll focus there. Nothing is wasted, because every minute is targeted to what they need.

Another big difference is confidence. In a classroom, a wrong answer can feel embarrassing. With tuition, mistakes are part of the process. We break work into small, achievable steps, so students leave each session knowing they’ve made progress. I often see children who once said “I can’t do English” begin to enjoy it when they realise they can succeed with the right support.

Tuition also helps with exam clarity. At school, students hear the mark scheme in teacher-speak, which can sound confusing. In tuition, I explain it in plain English so they know exactly what examiners want. Together, we practise applying those rules to real questions, so when they sit the paper, it feels familiar.

So, while classroom learning gives students the foundation, tuition adds the missing pieces: personalised teaching, calm space to ask questions, and strategies that build both skills and confidence. It doesn’t replace school - it strengthens it.
